Møster! album release concert live from Duper Studio
About the experience
Join the band Møster! for a special live concert from inside the machinery that has played an essential role in creating their sound. As they release their 5th studio album in 10 years of sonic explorations on the genre-dissolving Norwegian label Hubro, director Mats Andersen and photographer Øystein Fyxe will create fascinating imagery from the action of a live studio concert recording. The sound will be in safe hands of producer and modular synth phenomenon Jørgen “Sir Dupermann” Træen.
Møster!
Is a quartet made of musicians known from other more famous bands, which makes it fit the definition of a supergroup. But supergroups often have short lives, whereas Møster! is in their 10th year and more vital than ever.
Their new album named ‘Dust Breathing’ is released on December 11th 2020 on Hubro, and counts their album number 5. It acts as a distillate from the previous album ‘States of Minds’, a beautiful monster of a double vinyl which was very well received internationally, critically acclaimed for its rich sonic palette and diverse musical associations. The recording of “States of Minds” was done over two 5-day periods in Duper Studio with the profound intention of evoking and merging all musical peculiarities of the band members, including Jørgen Træen’s producer and modular synth skills. After capturing close to 10 hours of collaborative song writing and free improvisations, the music was boiled down to 80 minutes through an extensive postproduction and mixing period. Over the following two years, Kjetil Møster focused his work in his PhD fellowship in Artistic Research at the University of Bergen on extracting and reassembling some of the singular qualities that the band discovered on ‘States of Minds’ and sketched out the musical foundation that led to ‘Dust Breathing’ now being released.
The live sound will be mixed and produced by Jørgen Træen whose involvement in all five Møster! releases has been essential for shaping the band’s sound. Jørgen will also join in as a musician playing his modular synthesizers which has a prominent role on ‘States of Minds’.
For this studio-concert livestream, Møster! teams up with filmmaker duo Mats Andersen and Øystein Fyxe. They are frequent collaborators on film- and music projects both domestic and abroad. They work in various genres, including documentary, music videos, cover art, title sequences and visuals. Fyxe is the photographer, and Andersen is a founder of Rebel Unit, a Bergen based creative studio for visual artists and filmmakers, where he specializes in motion graphics and visual effect production.
The Møsters:
Kjetil Møster is a saxophone player who since the early 2000’s has been constantly exploring new territories with his instrument doing long jumps between genres. In 2006 he was named “International Jazz Talent of the Year”, only to have a break from the jazz scene to tour with electro-rockers Datarock. He has been involved in projects with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra feat. Chick Corea and Pat Metheny, recorded and toured with Röyksopp & Robyn, Lars Vaular and Enslaved, written music for sinfonietta BIT20, and has been involved in numerous experimental projects.
Guitarist Hans Magnus Ryan is also known as ‘Snah’ of Motorpsycho, in which his imaginative and groundbreaking guitar sound is one of the main pillars. He also participates on Deathprod’s otherworldly albums and concerts, and releases music with BOL & SNAH, Reflections in Cosmo and drummer Thomas Strønen.
Electric bassman Nikolai Hængsle is known for his distinct bass sound and pounding beat through the bands Elephant9 and Band of Gold. He is known to a wider public as the bass player in BigBang and National Bank.
Drummer Kenneth Kapstad has successfully followed his project of merging virtuoso jazz qualities with authentic rock aesthetics. He caught the world’s gaze when joining Motorpsycho in 2007, and has produced diverse music with projects like Monolithic, Goat the Head, Grand General and Stein Thorleif Bjella.
Producer, sound engineer and modular synth phantasmagoric Jørgen Træen founded Duper Studio a couple of decades ago and has since then been in the foreground of Norwegian music producers and sound engineers, working with pop successes like Susanne Sundfør and Jaga Jazzist, while doing a majority of the mixes on the label Hubro.
